Case story

Theiss Thermal Power Plant

With a total effect reaching 800 megawatts, the thermal power plant in Theiss holds a significant role in bringing a consistent and reliable supply of power, gas and heat to the Northern part of Lower Austria. The power plant was built in 1974 and consists of two units. In one of the units, the control gear needed a complete renewal in 2008.

The end-user

EVN AG/Theiss Thermal Power Plant

The Thermal Power Plant in Theiss plays an important part in supplying heat, power and gas to the Northern part of Lower Austria. Fuelled by oil and natural gas, the total effect of the thermal power plant reaches 800 megawatts. The power plant was built in 1974 and consists of two units.

The Project

The control gear in one of the units needed a total renewal that included an up-to-date technical solution. To obtain this, Logstrup provided a type-tested low voltage control panel with two assemble busbar systems. The busbar systems were supplied by two substations. As the thermal power plants hold such an important role in supplying reliable energy in an efficient manner, it is important to prioritize uptime during operation and maintenance. To ensure this, the two busbar systems were connected by a bus-coupler. The incomer section performs with an effect of 1250kVA and is equipped with the type tested Logstrup Omega control gear system.

The Challenge

Since the thermal power plant is from 1974 and only one of the two units needed a renewal, it was necessary to find a solution that would work with the original parts of the power plant. The thermal power plant needs to provide a reliable consistent supply of gas, power and heat which requires a high level of security to avoid downtime. Furthermore, the system needed to be easily maintainable due to the high impact environment.
